Desert Angel

03/15/2016 By Sarah 2 Comments

One of the most magical scenes I ever got to be a part of was when the sun set over the blue mountains of Badwater Basin, Death Valley, and cast its last rays across the salt flats. We were illuminated in a light that felt almost angelic, and it was an ethereal thing to see the how the wide open expanse felt completely different with the shift in the light. What was harsh bright light all day, became unbelievably soft and pale. The moment the sun touched to top of the mountains it was like a hush fell across everyone. Suddenly it looked like we were standing on a cloud above the world. The air cooled and we breathed a sigh of relief. Full of inspiration, I flitted about like a desert angel for the last segment of the shoot.

I could have stayed there all evening to watch the light fade ever so softly into night. But we had a bit of a drive back to our hotel and there was only one restaraunt in the whole of Death Valley, so we packed up before it got dark and eagerly rushed to get back on the desert road.

I want to say so much more about this experience, but it was just one of those things you had to be there for. You be surprised how even these photos that I love so much don’t hardly do the place justice. You just have to see it with your own eyes. That moment of the sun touching those mountains, it was so fleeting. But I know I’ll remember it perfectly, as it’s a sight hard to forget.

Stay tuned for our video from this campaign, up next!

El Vaquero

When planning this campaign with El Vaquero, aka EV Boots Italy, we knew it had to be someplace dreamy and also edgy. The Badwater Basin salt flats in Death Valley, CA became the vision for this shoot, and though the conditions were rough and not many people have shot there because of it, that didn’t stop us.

You can’t really be prepared to spend a long day of shooting in the brightest part of Death Valley. Luckily it’s not as hot in winter, only being approximately 80 degrees, but it was still an insane day. We buckled down like the desert nomads we are, bringing our top game to make this campaign come to life as we had envisioned. This is probably the most hard core modeling I’ve ever done. Lunges and leaps and running, running, running… under the desert sun and dressed in lots of leather. All my previous ballet trailing and late workout routines really paid of in this moment. We probably downed 40 water bottles and definitely left feeling very salty, with salt crystals in and on just about everything!

Hand made in Italy, EV has done an amazing job pairing necessity with a bit of edge in their designs, in a fashion forward trend that their boots are known for. You really won’t see anything like this anywhere else, which is why I’m excited to be working with them further on more projects to come!

And stay tuned for the last outfit from this campaign, it had so many beautiful photos I had to dedicate a whole blog post to it!

Matador

I’m taking it back to our desert days with some never before released photos from our Sunset Road campaign for Spell Designs! I always wanted to release the rest of the campaign with extra photos that no one has yet seen, and this road trip in Tucson, Arizona, made for so many amazing photos. It took me this long to pull everything together! This is just 1 of 6 more posts in the making, so get ready to drool over the magic we made.

Sunset Road is still one of my favorite campaign trips. It took a ton of work scouting the locations before hand and doing research on the history of Tucson and the Barrio, where half the shoot took place. It was about 100 degrees each day, and about 70 at night. We brought our airstream for the first ever campaign trip this time, and we roughed it with no air conditioning because it was so hot outside our generator wouldn’t run! I don’t think I ever sweat so much in my life…. except maybe at Coachella.

These photos took place right before dusk in Barrio Viejo, where all the beautiful historical houses are lovingly being restored. It’s a quiet neighborhood outside of town, and the vibes are so interesting as it entwines the old history and locals who might have lived here for ages, along with the new crowd moving in and restoring it to what feels like an arts district.

At night, spanish music flowed out the door of some unnamed tavern, and we sighed in relief as the air cooled. It was the last outfit shot that day, with many more to go at other locations.

Stay tuned for more from this campaign!

sunlit dust

Every once in a while I get to connect with a brand, and it’s magic, and we jive perfectly. Siren Brand is one of those! You may remember the big campaign we shot for them in the tippy top of California, in sleepy Crescent City.

Now we have ventured down the coast to Costa Mesa, a busy place that has so much to see and do. I’ve found myself calling it home for almost 2 months, in love with how it seems to be at the center, with everything you want to do within a hour’s drive. It’s one of the busier places we’ve stayed in a while, and it’s a refreshing change of scenery and pace from the low traffic areas of northern California and the various deserts we’ve roamed.

For several days we continued to visit our favorite beach in the area, Pirate’s Cove. It’s hidden away in a sandy nook among giant textured rocks. You can climb and explore all over, up into the little bit of jungle or down to find the hidden stairs to the beach. I tend to love smaller more wild beaches, over the wide open sand beaches. I always spend more time exploring than sitting still. In fact, I haven’t just sat on a beach for enjoyment in a while. We are always adventuring and shooting, needing to satisfy my desire to capture everything to share with the world. I feel the most content after a good shoot in a new or favorite place. I can keep the photos forever, and perhaps share a piece of our adventure with you and inspire you to get out there too!

Huntington Beach

03/03/2016 By Sarah Leave a Comment

After staying in Costa Mesa for almost 2 months, we finally made it to Huntington Beach, which is only 10 mins down the road from where we’ve been staying. We took the day to shoot a little campaign for PB&J Boutique, before heading out of town for a desert campaign for a week.

Sea gulls fly overhead, surfers head to the water like seals in their black wetsuits, sun bronzed athletes play volley ball below the pier. It’s one of those California beaches everyone pictures when dreaming of the west coast- wide open and dotted with palm trees, people, and sounds of endless summer. We head down the bike path and into the sand so I can run and twirl under the sun. I love to let loose on the beach. That the magic place where land meets sea and creates a slice of heaven called a beach… that’s where I am the happiest. I’m always dreaming of the next beach we will explore, constantly on the hunt for the perfect one that fills my quota for sand, sun, cool water, and a bit of wild nature. Perhaps I’ll make a Cali beach guide in a future post!

Wearing a complete PB&J Boutique look.

PS- you may have noticed some changes to my hair this new season, thanks to Jeff the owner at Artkiteks Hair Studio! I’m excited to shift into the new look I’ve been dreaming up for a while. It feels freeing and refreshing to embrace some change!
