Blue Laguna

02/11/2016 By Sarah 1 Comment

The turquoise and blue waters of Laguna stole my heart the moment I set eyes on it. I watched the waves hit the rocks from the top of the cliff. Below me the colors swirled and the water glistened so bright it was blinding. Off in the distance a whale made its presence known, blowing water through its blowhole and into the sky. How often do you get to see a whale swim by?!

It is like the saturation is turned up on this little slice of paradise- flowers in full bloom, vibrant blood orange against the turquoise backdrop. A humming bird hovered across from me, appearing from the flowers and watching me for a moment. It caught my attention, as if it was meant to convey something, then buzzed away as quickly as it came. I’d heard about hummingbirds and their importance in spiritual meaning, but I assumed it was coincidence.

But sure enough, during the second part of our shoot, after hiking down the cliff and rock climbing to Secret Beach for some other photos, the same little ruby-throated fellow found me again. At first I didn’t notice. I was hot, dehydrated from forgetting to bring water down with us, burnt from lack of shade, and our shoot was running long. I had stepped on one too many barrel cactuses and was paranoid about what other little critters might pinch my toes or prick me. (The tide pools are abundant with crabs and amazing (creepy) sea life.)

But my hummingbird friend was sure to catch my attention again. I heard the strangest little chirping sounds, almost insect sounding, as I attempted to model without passing out in the direct sun. I finally looked over, and there he was, hovering to my left, trying so hard to communicate with me with his little chirps. I immediately held out my hands in astonishment, he was so close! I felt like an idiot, being paranoid and stressed about everything going on around me. He caught my gaze and hovered there, and in that moment I told myself how ridiculous I was being. How the past 2 weeks of chaotic work and shooting was taking a toll on me, and that I needed to really REALLY work on learning how to just…. live.

The moment after this thought shot through my mind, my tiny friend was gone, zipping away past Josh and off towards the ocean. Josh saw it happen and was just as amazed. I couldn’t believe the feeling that came over me from this tiny presence, and I couldn’t wait to get home and read up on the significance of the hummingbird symbol. I wasn’t at all surprised at what I learned.

“The hummingbird spirit animal symbolizes the enjoyment of life and lightness of being. Those who have the hummingbird as a totem are invited to enjoy the sweetness of life, lift up negativity wherever it creeps in and express love more fully in their daily endeavors. This fascinating bird is capable of the most amazing feats despite its small size, such as traveling great distances or being able to fly backwards. By affinity with the hummingbird, those who have this bird as totem may be encouraged to develop their adaptability and resiliency while keeping a playful and optimistic outlook. Inspired by this totem, you will be inclined to accomplish what seems impossible to most while keeping it light and enjoyable.

If the hummingbird shows up in your life as a spirit animal, it may remind you to enjoy life’s simple pleasures and take time to enjoy yourself. The hummingbird’s wisdom carries an invitation to take part in and draw to you life’s sweetness, like you would drink the nectar of your own flower.

By association with the hummingbird power animal, you may have already developed a strong adaptability and are typically quick to respond to any demand. You may also have a high sensibility and feel every nuances of emotions or movement in your environment.

The hummingbird is known for burning a lot of energy quickly to keep flying and therefore needs to find sources of food constantly. If you have the hummingbird as a totem, you may benefit from resting often and taking time to feed yourself with enough, whether it’s physically, emotionally or spiritually, to keep going.”

So in the midst of madness, I felt like the universe shouted to me so clearly, to just STOP. Now I’ve recognized my spirit animal, how amazing is that?! This big beautiful master piece of a world is connected to us. And sometimes the universe is trying to send you a message. I want to learn listen!

blue bay

Returning to the Pirate’s Cove to shoot for Sea Gypsies was inevitable, with it’s hidden nooks and coves waiting to be explored. It’s like a mermaid’s getaway. The rocks are my favorite part, standing from the top and looking down over the blue bay. The grooves of the weathered stones provide such an interesting sight. As the sun moves through the sky and the light shifts, the shadows shift and change the rocky surface, spotlighting different tones and textures. Coming back each day, it felt different every time. The moody evening light painted soft golds onto pale hues. I always seem to fall madly in love with rocks… and this place is a texture lover’s heaven!

Pirate’s Cove 2

02/03/2016 By Sarah 1 Comment

Part 2 of our Road South campaign shoot at Pirate’s Cove, featuring some brands I’m currently in love with!

It has been an absolute dream forgetting that it’s winter here. When you wake up hot and baked by the sun in the morning, then open the windows to let the cool morning breeze in… that is a little slice of paradise. I can slip out of bed and into a tee shirt and not be cold. Or walk barefoot on the beach when the sun is out, warming the air. It feels like spring here, and it’s got me in a relaxed and inspired state of mind. I’m dreaming of tropical hideaways, beach huts, turquoise water, bronzed sun-kissed skin, and salty hair. I’m seeing a plane ride in the near future…

Pirate’s Cove

02/02/2016 By Sarah Leave a Comment

Lately my mind has been lost in dreams of palm trees, sandy coves, and beach textures. I can happily admit we’ve been watching all the classic island movies each night, from Robinson Crusoe to The Blue Lagoon. And each morning I wake up with fresh inspiration for blog adventures and photo shoot ideas. My inspiration even extends out into concepts of design and image, and I’m really excited for these visions to come to life in a few different projects.

One of my new favorite places is the Pirate’s Cove Beach. It’s a texture lover’s dream, with rocks that have the most beautiful weathered texture. We climb and climb until we look over the edge, and see the hidden cove with soft wet sand that I can’t wait to dance across barefoot. It was the first barefoot step onto the sand I’ve made since our Florida adventures… surprisingly enough. And it was like returning to my home. Naturally,  mermaid can’t stay away from the ocean too long before finding her way back. So I’m happy to say I’ve rediscovered myself with this new chapter of our adventures on the coast. And I feel this will lead to some reinventing of my self, through my self expression, and a slight new direction for the blog. I’m ever so excited to take you along on this new journey!

To tease you with some beautiful textures and sandy tones, here is part one of a campaign we shot from our The Road South campaign. See outfit details below, and stay tuned for part 2 coming up next!
