Hollywood Baby

05/06/2016 By Sarah Leave a Comment

Like an angel, she glowed
for nobody but herself.
Every fiber of her being were
just sparks of a bigger fire-
of passion on the inside and
moonbeams without.

She spun like a windmill through time,
never counting the days, like she never aged.
She had chipped nail polish and a cheeky smile,
her eyes were green and freely wild.
And nobody could tame her heart,
because it felt so much, it felt everything.
She had something good to prove.

Passion, like poppies, were her pink lips.
She stomped her foot and swayed her hips.
Tiny dancer on the lawn,
barefoot child with hair grown long.
She’s sultry sunkissed salty-sweet,
always late but perfectly neat.
And never can she be compared,
she dances to the rhythm of her own beat.

I used to write every single day, back before I even delved fully into photography. Words were my form of self expression- a way to explore myself, understand who I was, and put it out there for whoever cared to read it. It didn’t matter if people loved it or hated it. Each prose or poem was like pealing back another layer of myself to better understand the complex persona inside me. My writings were part of me, and sort of therapeutic, giving me self confidence as I discovered all my deep passions through expressing them. I don’t often have those breakthrough moments anymore, where my heart sort of melts onto paper (or the keyboard) and puts itself out there in such a raw way. But when it does, it’s like the same old feeling, of creating something personal. Which is refreshing after working solely in the fashion/media industry, which is all about the visuals, and sometimes lacks in that deeper meaning I like to put on things.

I find I tend to burst into writing whenever I’ve had a hard day, where I feel attacked or hurt by careless people. I feel the need to express my heart in defense of myself, not understanding why people, sometimes even strangers, can be so cruel and need to tear you down. And I can feel down about it all day, just wishing we could all be positive instead of negative. But it’s true, the only person who controls your feelings is yourself. I won’t say I can just brush off hurtful things and not feel the sting, I’m probably too feeling based to ever do that. But I can turn my focus to something that will lift me up, and change my day into one of spreading light and positive energy. And then I can affect people through the burst of kindness I feel, and perhaps take make up for the negativity. It usually leaves me feeling even better, and sort of refreshed after feeling so down.

Sometimes, just a take an hour for yourself. Do something that only benefits you, and recharge your batteries. If you’re an introverted personality like me, this is crucial to stay positive. Then you can unleash that supercharge of love on the world!

This day we decided to drive around Hollywood with the windows down, after a day of work and mingling with brands in LA. We didn’t know where we were going, we just followed the interesting sites, people watched, and explored the Hollywood Hills. At dusk we headed to the top of one of the hills, following the winding road up, and stumbled upon this alcove overflowing with fascia blooms. It was under the dimly lit sky with the last remaining light, we decided to have an impromptu photo shoot. And sometimes those end up creating some of my favorite photos!

"Once I get a good idea into my head, I have to go for it. And I’ll be damned if someone tells me I can’t. The moment you listen to everyone else, you lose your purpose."
